PD2: Advanced Hard Surface Design
In this course we will be using 3D modeling tools to help us create believable and functional hard surface concept designs. We will learn to use MOI3D (Moment of Inspiration 3D) as our main design tool as we start off by creating smaller weapons and props at the beginning of the term. We will then work our way up to creating more complex hard surface concept designs towards the end of the term as we add Sub D modeling techniques in Maya (or any other poly modeling software) to our design process. We will finish off our hard surface designs by adding materials, lighting and rendering out our concepts in Keyshot and add final touches in Photoshop. As we are learning the 3D tools to help us create believable concept designs, we will also learn to collect and understand reference in terms of function, materials, manufacturing and assembly techniques in order to add a high level of realism to our fictional designs. By the end of the term you will have the knowledge and confidence to use 3D as a design tool, you will have a solid understanding of how use reference to bring a high level of realism to your hard surface concept designs, and you will have a few strong pieces to add to your portfolio.
