GNED: Game Narrative Environment Design

GNED is a class that focuses on the process to create an environment concept through a narrative and gameplay lens.  The process we will discover is understanding how to apply a theme, create points of interest and a ‘how to get there’ journey.  We will also be applying techniques in color, tone and lighting to push narrative elements and use design, shapes and language to push functionality and gameplay.

This class will execute in line drawing, schematics, and paintings.

Instructor:  Dave Sarabia, Concept artist & Instructor

Dave is a concept artist based in Los Angeles. With 5+ years of professional experience, he is currently working at Throttle Studios doing concept design for Movies, TV series, Theme Park, and AAA Video games. Under Scribble Pad Studios, he has worked with clients such as : Riot, Netflix, Disney Imagineering, Blizzard Entertainment, Cloud Imperium Games, Respawn Entertainment, Certain Infinity, Sony Music, Wizards of the Coast and more.

Focus: Becoming a better environment designer

Recommended education experience: WB1, WB2, AD1 and DC1

Suggested Materials: A computer or tablet with comparable drawing software such as photoshop, pro create etc

Location: All SUMMER 2024 Term courses will be held online.  All material, course structure and syllabus will remain the same.  Class will meet in an online meeting room hosted by Brainstorm School.

Requirements:  Computer with Photoshop and high speed internet.  Mic (highly recommended) and camera (optional)

What you can expect to learn:

  • Process in making an image

  • Sketching ideations

  • Basic Blender 3d modeling

  • Painting techniques in Photoshop

  • Telling a story through applying video game themes and functions
