Anatomy of Character Design

Anatomy for Invention Drawing/Concept Design uses the anatomy of the figure as a departure point to discuss and explore body type, form/function relationships, and story archetypes. Using anatomy as a springboard to abstraction, students will be taken through a formulaic look at recurring character types using the genres of games, animation, and comics to explore a process and language of character invention.

Open to all levels

Suggested Materials: Photoshop CS6 or higher, Tablet or Cintique

Other requirements: Cable speed internet (30 mb or higher)

Flash Structure: 5 Weeks, 2 hours per week. Course structured to deliver focused information and techniques. Each week will be live demonstrations and Lecture. There is no feedback offered in this course.

Instructor: Michael Hampton, Concept artist & Instructor
Steven Michael Hampton is an artist and educator in the fields of drawing, anatomy, and two- dimensional design. He has lectured and led workshops at private companies and schools such as Anatomy Tools, Blizzard Entertainment, CGMA, IDEA Academy, and Lucas Arts. Steven has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. and has additionally curated exhibitions in Los Angeles relating to themes of kitsch, monuments, and mourning, including Super-Salon (Flagstop), Traumatic Materiality (Autonomie), and Savage Sentimentality (Torrance Art Museum). For several years he was a board member of the Foundation for Art Resources (FAR), helping to organize Pacific Non-Standard Time: FAR 1977-Present, among other projects. Steven received his BFA from Art Center in Illustration, his MFA in Painting from Claremont Graduate University where he received the Karl and Beverly Benjamin Fellowship, an MA in Art History from University of California, Riverside writing his thesis on “Bad Painting and Kitsch,” and is currently completing his PhD in Art History at the University of California, Riverside.
