SB1: Storyboarding 1

Experience an introduction to the skills and language of storyboarding for animation.  Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of storyboarding, including the basics of cinematography, pacing, and script breakdown. Students will also learn the fundamental rules of storyboarding, and when—if ever—it is okay to break them. By the end of the class, participants will gain the foundational skills needed to create clear and engaging storyboards.  

Story 1 aims to introduce you to the world of storyboarding in animation. We will develop your draftsmanship, study the history of cinema, and strengthen your understanding of the storyboarding craft. This is an introductory course, no experience necessary.

Focus: Developing basic analytical and critical thinking skills for storyboarding and learning how to view storyboarding as a design problem for visual communication.

Recommended education experience: PBC & FND1 recommended

Suggested Materials: A computer or tablet with comparable drawing software such as photoshop, pro create etc

Location: All SUMMER 2024 Term courses will be held online.  All material, course structure and syllabus will remain the same.  Class will meet in an online meeting room hosted by Brainstorm School.

Requirements:  Computer with Photoshop and high speed internet.  Mic (highly recommended) and camera (optional)

Instructor: Ruth Baraz, Storyboard Artist & Instructor

Ruth Baraz is a storyboard artist/revisionist based in LA. She graduated from CalArts in 2018 and has been in the industry since 2019. She has experience as a full time employee at Disney TV Animation, BentoBox and Flying Bark. She also freelanced for Nickelodeon, SurfingGiant, and a few unannounced projects. Ruth has also been teaching different levels of animation for years. She taught summer art/animation courses for K-12 at the DigiPen Institute of Technology, and for the past 3 fall semesters, she has helped teach Story at her Alma Mater, CalArts.
